Yosemite
by Rain Perry

Behind the backstop
And at the breakfast table
On the school bus
And other assorted torture chambers
The temperature drops
The snow falls
The glacier forms

Ten thousands tons of ice
Are crushing you
Into a beautiful, one-of-a-kind
The thaw will come
And you will be
Yosemite

Year by year
Hour by hour
Insults scrape
Lonelinesses scours
Leaving erratics
And striations
A glacial terrain

Ten thousand tons of ice
Are crushing you
Into a beautiful, one-of-a-kind
The thaw will come
And you will be
Yosemite

I’ve seen the brightest sparks
Glowing in the faces
Of my friends whose lives have been
The biggest mess
They don’t make landmarks
Out of ordinary places
Only landscapes that have seen
The most distress

Someday you’ll dare
To open your heart
And you’ll melt
One like mine
Because you are worth knowing
Worth loving
After all

Ten thousand tons of ice
Are crushing you
Into a beautiful, one-of-a-kind
The thaw will come
And you will be
Yosemite
The thaw will come
And you will be
Yosemite

When i was a child a story was told
About the devil and a girl oh so bold
He offered her riches, a fortune of gold
And lovers abound
But she lifted her soul
She lifted her soul clean, oh clean
And like the story was told
On a dark country road
The same man appeared to me
But i reached
I reached
Through the rain to the devil's feet

Now twenty years later to the place i return
Where i scorned the angels for a passion that burned
There set in the tree a knot twisted and turned
The face of a creature hell bound
So long ago could my mind have played jokes on me
As darkness sets in unavoidable sin
The truth i try not to believe
That i reached i reached
Through the rain to the devil's feet

Nothing & Nowhere
Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton

Sketch of your faces
I still don’t know you
You aren’t permanent
Permanent

You want all of our moments stolen
Blind alleys and hallways to basements
How are you gonna hide till you disappear
Nothing and nowhere is golden

Apartments are cages
I still don’t know what is permanent
Permanent

Maybe all my possessions were precious
Truth is, all my possessions I somehow lost them
Been traveling so light, when we’re floating by
It seems nothing and nowhere is golden

Some say we’re lost in space
Some say we’re falling off the page
Some say our life is insane
But it isn’t insane on paper

Playgrounds are graveyards
And all of our scars are permanent
Permanent

There’s no replacement for places
I’ll always love you, you’re mine
Numb is the new high, all memories die out
‘Till nothing and nowhere is golden

Some say we always only wanna get off
Some say our hands are much too soft
Some say our life is insane
But it isn’t insane on paper
Some say our hair is in our eyes
Some say we’re out of our little minds
Some say our life is insane
But it isn’t insane to have to ask
Nobody helps a liar.

ride the blue wind high and free
she'll lead you down through misery
leave you low, come time to go
alone and low as low can be

if I had a nickel I'd find a game
if I won a dollar I'd make it rain
if it rained an ocean I'd drink it dry
and lay me down dissatisfied

legs to walk and thoughts to fly
eyes to laugh and lips to cry
a restless tongue to classify
all born to grow and grown to die

so tell my baby I said so long
tell my mother I did no wrong
tell my brother to watch his own
and tell my friends to mourn me none

I'm chained upon the face of time
feelin' full of foolish rhyme
there ain't no dark till something shines
I'm bound to leave this dark behind

ride the blue wind high and free
she'll lead you down through misery
leave you low, come time to go
alone and low as low can be

When Under Ether
PJ Harvey

The ceiling is moving
Moving in time
Like a conveyor belt
Above my eyes

When under ether
The mind comes alive
But conscious of nothing
But the will to survive

I lay on the bed
Waist down undressed
Look up at the ceiling
Feeling happiness
Human kindness

The woman beside me
Is holding my hand
I point at the ceiling
She smiles so kind

Something's inside me
Unborn and unblessed
Disappears in the ether
One world to the next
Human kindness
Nobody helps a liar.

Virgil Caine is the name
and I served on the Danville train
til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again
in the winter of '65
we were hungry, just barely alive
by May the tenth, Richmond had fell
it's a time I remember, oh so well

the night they drove Old Dixie down
and the bells were ringing
the night they drove Old Dixie Down
and the people were singin'
they went "la, la la la, la la"
la, la la la, la la, la la

back with my wife in Tennessee
when one day she called to me
"Virgil, quick, come see -
there goes Robert E. Lee!"
now I don't mind choppin' wood
and I don't care if the money's no good
you take what you need and you leave the rest
but they should never have taken the very best

the night they drove Old Dixie down
and the bells were ringing
the night they drove Old Dixie Down
and the people were singin'
they went "la, la la la, la la"
la, la la la, la la, la la

like my father before me, I will work the land
like my brother above me, who took a rebel stand
he was just eighteen, proud and brave
but a Yankee laid him in his grave
I swear by the mud below my feet
you can't raise a Caine back up when he's in defeat

the night they drove Old Dixie down
and the bells were ringing
the night they drove Old Dixie Down
and the people were singin'
they went "la, la la la, la la"
la, la la la, la la, la la

Love that song, too. So I decided to do a bit of research.

Here is Major-General George Stoneman:

Image

Near as I can tell from my cursory read, Stoneman was tearing up those tracks (and anything else he found) in the closing days of the war. The Danville train was part of the Richmond and Danville Railroad and helped supply the Confederate army.

Long before Schwarzenegger, Stoneman was the 15th Governor of California from 1883-1887.

It's cool to be able to put a face and story to the history recounted within such an evocative song. Oh yeah, it was recorded in Sammy Davis, Jr.'s pool house. Bet Stoneman never saw that coming.
You can't really dust for vomit.

The Party’s Over
by Eliza Gilkyson

the party’s over, we had us a time
everybody got loaded, everybody looked fine
we emptied the coffers of water and wine
the party’s over
we had a good time
we danced on the tables midnight til dawn
til all the time was up and the good stuff gone

the house is a shambles, broken glass in the streets
guttering candles, blood on the sheets
we burned all the kindling, passed the bottle around
watched the last coals dwindling
and the ice melting down
we danced on the tables midnight til dawn
til all the time was up and the good stuff gone

the party’s over, we had a blast
brought in the lawyers to cover our ass
left a note for the children to clean up the mess
the party’s over
it was a big success!
we danced on the tables midnight til dawn
til all the time was up and the good stuff gone

the party’s over, we had a blast
brought in the lawyers to cover our ass
left a note for the children to clean up the mess
the party’s over
it was a big success!
we danced on the tables midnight til dawn
til all the time was up and the good stuff gone

the party’s over
the party’s over

darling, i'm afraid to close my eyes when i'm goin to bed
i'm afraid you'll crack the phone down over my head

why are all american girls so rough?
damn, a girl can't ever hurt you enough

lady, you knock me on my knees and i can't stand up
you got that look in your eye and you smack my butt

why are all american girls so rough?
why do all american girls act so tough?
why are all american girls so rough?

that hole you're digging in my ribs
it ain't no real wound
so baby take it easy
let's try to be friends

why are all american girls so rough?
damn, that girl can't ever hurt you enough

lady, you knock me down on my knees and i can't stand up
you got the look in your eye, and you smack my butt

why are all american girls so rough?
why do all american girls act so tough?
why are all american girls so rough?

american girls
american girls
why are all American girls so rough?
american girls
american girls
american girls
why are all american girls so rough?
american girls
american girls
american girls
why are all american girls so rough?
why are all american girls so rough?

The Littlest Birds - Be Good Tanyas

Well I feel like an old hobo,
I'm sad lonesome and blue
I was fair as the summer day
now the summer days are through
You pass through places
and places pass through you
But you carry 'em with you
on the souls of your travellin' shoes

Well I love you so dearly I love you so clearly
Wake you up in the mornin' so early
Just to tell you I got the wanderin' blues
I got the wanderin' blues
And i'm gonna quit these ramblin' ways
one of these days soon
And I'll sing

The littlest birds sing the prettiest songs...

Well it's times like these I feel so small and wild
Like the ramblin' footsteps of a wanderin' child
And i'm lonesome as a lonesome whippoorwill
Singin these blues with a warble and a trill
But i'm not too blue to fly
No i'm not too blue to fly cuz

The littlest birds sing the prettiest songs...

Well I love you so dearly I love you so fearlessly
Wake you up in the mornin' so early
Just to tell you I got the wanderin' blues
I got the wanderin' blues
And I don't wanna leave you
I love you through and through

Oh I left my baby on a pretty blue train
And I sang my songs to the cold and the rain
I had the wanderin' blues
And I sang those wanderin' blues
And i'm gonna quit these ramblin' ways
one of these days soon
And i'll sing

The littlest birds sing the prettiest songs....

I don't care if the sun don't shine
I don't care if nothin' is mine
I don't care if I'm nervous with you
I'll do my lovin' in the wintertime

chimney falls and lovers blaze
thought that i was young
now i've freezing hands and bloodless veins
as numb as i've become

i'm so tired
i wish i was the moon tonight

last night i dreamt i'd forgotten my name
cause i'd sold my soul but i woke just the same
i'm so lonely
i wish i was the moon tonight

god blessed me, i'm a free man
with no place free to go
i'm paralyzed and collar-tight
no pills for what i fear

this is crazy
i wish i was the moon tonight

chimney falls and lovers blaze
thought that i was young
now i've freezing hands and bloodless veins
as numb as i've become

i'm so tired
i wish i was the moon tonight

how will you know if you found me at last
cause i'll be the one, be the one, be the one
with my heart in my lap
i'm so tired, i'm so tired
and i wish i was the moon tonight

One of my favorite songs Turk!

Projected endlessly, it’s so FUCKING beautiful!!!"

I love it, too, Scott. And a very good human being from Kentucky turned me on to it. I'll forever be grateful.

Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to me
Sometimes I don’t understand
We give our lives to those we love
Like an hour gives time to sand

Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to me
Sometimes it doesn’t seem fair
We’re born to make and create love
When it goes, we wonder where

chorus
I have most of what I want
More than what I need
I have one friend that’s more than
Most any of my dreams
I have most of what I want
More than what I need
I have all a woman could want
On a cross beneath the tree

Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to me
Sometimes I don’t give a damn
I never wanted much from anyone
Not my mother, my father or a man

bridge
I did want love a time or two
I did want a big house, too
I got this and I got that
I got it all as a matter of fact
But sometimes, I turn my head
Look around to see where it went
An empty cradle, your spirit above
Sometimes, a memory, is barely enough
"Tell me the truth, you sweet son of a bitch"
Browncoat

By request (sorta) for Carly:

Yesterday he said my eyes
Were fading fast away
I said well what do you expect
You asked me not to stay
And if it had all been for the best
I wouldn't feel this way
He said, oh he said

He said it's crazy
How love stays with me, yeah
You know and it hurts me
'Cause I don't wanna fight this war
And it's amazing
To see me reading through this scene
Of love and fear
And apologies
Apologies

My love is like a blanket
Gets a little bit too warm sometimes
I wanna wrap somebody in it
Who can hold me in his arms
'Cause when it got a little too hot in there
He was always steppin' out for air
And he froze, oh he froze

He said it's crazy
How love stays with me, yeah
You know and it hurts me
'Cause I don't wanna fight this war
And it's amazing
To see me reading through this scene
Of love and fear
And apologies
Apologies

Yesterday he looked at me
With a tear in his eye and said
I'll always tell you you're my friend
I hope I don't have to lie
'Cause it's clear you love another man
I said, You're damn right
And he said, oh he said

He said it's crazy
How love stays with me, yeah
You know and it hurts me
'Cause I don't wanna fight this war
And it's amazing
To see me reading through this scene
Of love and fear
And apologies

He said it's crazy
How love stays with me
You know and it hurts me
That I didn't figure it out before
And now it's too late for a soliloquy
Way too late for dignity
It's time
For apologies
Apologies
