Emmylou Harris

Yes, there's a whole world of music out there besides Patty.

That's something to look forward to, particularly with Brian Ahern producing (I didn't know he was still alive). I expect it will be a marked departure from the Daniel Lanois/Malcolm Burn sound of her last three albums. I love the sound Daniel Lanois' creates when he produces - not so much Malcolm Burn. In spite of the critical success of Red Dirt Girl and Stumble into Grace, I think that had more to do with the quality of the songs and that a number of producers could have created a better sound on those albums. But maybe I'm biased because Burn proved to be such bad luck for Patty on Living with Ghosts and Silver Bell. I don't know which producer worked on what on Silver Bell, but the funeral dirge drums on What You Are has Burn's fingerprints all over it.

BTW, Daniel Lanois has just released an incredible album called Here Is What Is. It has a great version of his "Where Will I Be", which was included on Emmylou's Wrecking Ball. For a taste, you can listen to the song "Here Is What Is" in it's entirety here: http://redfloorrecords.com/HereIsWhatIs.htm.

Hmmm. Seems I've gotten way off topic here. Oh well, whatever.

Arlene wrote:Emmylou has a new CD coming out on June 10th entitled "All I Intended To Be." The track list includes a song titled "Moon Song." I'm not sure but I'm willing to bet.... Here's the track listing, which appears to include covers of songs by Tom Waits, Tracy Chapman, and Billy Joe Shaver as well as Patty.:

01. Shores of White Sand
02. Hold On
03. Moon Song
04. Broken Man's Lament
05. Gold
06. How She Could Sing the Wildwood
07. All That You Have is Your Soul
08. Take That Ride
09. Old Five and Dimers Like Me
10. Kern River
11. Not Enough
12. Sailing Round the Room
13. Beyond the Great Divide

I just heard a sample of Moon Song on amazon! It is Patty's Moon Song and it was really good from what I could tell of the few second sample! There are backup singers on it too which for some reason I can't see included on Moon Song (not that they were bad or anything)

I'm listening to her version of "Wayfaring Stranger," from Roses in the Snow.

Emmylou also does a good version of All That You Have Is Your Soul on her new album.

Emmy will be on Letterman this Thursday the 12th.

Not only that, but Emmylou's back-up vocalists on Letterman will be Tift Merritt and Phoebe Snow!

I bought this cd last weekend and it hasn't stopped spinning in my car ... which is where I've been spending most of my time over the past few weeks! I love cd .... I really, really love it. She's simply amazing.

I also have Western Wall ... which I think is another brilliant collaberation of two incredible voices.

FWIW, this show was recently torrented on Dime:

Emmylou Harris and Spyboy
2001-07-28
Podunk Bluegrass Festival
Martin Park - East Hartford, CT. USA

Lineage & transfer:

SBD --> Sony D8 -->DAT --> Tascam HDP2 Digital Transfer --> WAV -->
Soundforge 8 --> CdWave --> FLAC level 8

Disc one:

01. Red Dirt Girl
02. The Pearl
03. Wayfaring Stranger
04. I Don't Want To Talk About It
05. Ain't Living Long Like This
06. Pancho and Lefty
07. Raise the Dead
08. Get Up John
09. All I Left Behind
10. My Antonia
11. Goodbye
12. Orphan Girl

Disc two:

01. Going Back to Harlan
02. Deeper Well/Band Intros
03. Calling My Children Back Home
04. Michelangelo
05. The Boy From Tupelo
06. Wheels
07. Born To Run
08. The Maker
Encore:
09. Boulder to Birmingham

What can I say about this fabulous recording of one of the greatest, classiest artists on the planet? Emmylou is one of those rare performers who actually improves with age, and shows no signs of becoming irrelevant anytime soon.

There has been a couple nice shows from her recent tour on Dime. This is from the Red Dirt Girl era, and it has not widely circulated until now. This is a fresh transfer of a fantastic performance and a great-sounding recording. If you are an Emmy fan, casual or hardcore, do not pass this one up. It's been one of my favorite live shows for a while, and I am finally able to share this with the masses.

Ummmm, if anyone has a copy, I'd love to get one!

In return, if you like Todd Snider, Ryan Bingham, Black Crowes, DBT, or Jason Isbell, I'd be happy to burn some of their live shows. And, not even in return -- if you just like their music and want to hear some great performances, just let me know and I'll get some of their shows to you!

I'll do almost anything for a copy of the Podunk show. Just ask. Let's barter. Don't be scared. Emmy's worth it.

A friend of a friend who knows somebody snatched the torrent and sent me a copy of Emmylou doing "Goodbye"
Be forewarned: the song isn't compressed into some zippety-doo-dah file or any mp3, so it might take a while to download. Trust me, it'll be worth it.

Thank you for posting that, Bruce. It is really great. It also was rather heart-rendering listening to this song given that Fernando, a huge Emmylou fan and beloved member of emmylou.net, passed away suddenly a few days ago.

You're welcome. And thanks for letting me know about Fernando.
I'll post the link on emmy.net as a remembrance.

Since you're being such a big brave boy about having your colonoscopy, maybe there'll be a complete 2 disc set coming your way.
This offer supersedes the usual doctor treats like lollipops and unlimited ice cream (though WHY your colon would benefit from ice cream is beyond me).

If outta agrees to a colonoscopy, SHE can have a set too.

You two ... are just great. Thanks for making me smile. 8)

Tonto, everything in my life pales in comparison to what Turk's going through! As far as I know, my health is good. It's my head that messes with me -- which I blame on vertigo!
