Yes, there's a whole world of music out there besides Patty.

You Rock, marybeth! I think you may be the one who led me to this forum to begin with!
So, how do we reel in those other posters?
Offer chocolates?
Have a PattyChat?
Talk about shoes, sunglasses and lipstick?
Talk about the Cubs?
I can't wait for Lucinda's new cd to come out! I can't wait to see her on Letterman!

Just for the record: Like all the rest of the songs on that all-female Greg Brown tribute album, "Lately" was written by... Greg Brown! And like all the other remarkable covers Lucinda has recorded, she does a truly stellar job of making it her own.
Yeah, a few of us convened in Austin this past weekend to see Patty and a whole mess of other musicians. Lu was not among them, but I'll see her twice this coming weekend. Great to see everyone and Patty was wonderful as usual (Doug was also on hand for her set), I'll post a few words about it after I catch up on work and sleep!

Lu did "Real Love" - the first single from her new album. The band is killer hot.

Wow, great show in NYC last night! The band really is excellent, and Lu has lost some weight and seems to have a lot more energy than when I saw her last year. She played a nice variety of songs from most of her albums and five or six from Little Honey. They did a great cover of For What It's Worth during the encore!

Damn, I missed it, too. Anyways, "Going Driftless", the Greg Brown tribute album mentioned earlier features some other excellent artists as well as Lucinda. Here's the track list:
1. Lately - Lucinda Williams
2. The Poet Game - Ani DiFranco
3. The Train Carrying Jimmie Rodgers Home - Iris Dement
4. Where is Maria - Ferron
5. Sleeper - Eliza Gilkyson
6. Ella Mae - Pieta, Zoe and Constie Brown
7. Summer Evening - Gillian Welch
8. Small Dark Movie - Lucy Kaplansky
9. Spring & All - Mary Chapin Carpenter
10. Say a Little Prayer - Shawn Colvin
11. Early - Victoria Williams
12. Two Little Feet - Karen Savoca
13. Hey Baby Hey - Robin Lee Berry
14. Wash My Eyes - Leandra Peak

No problem, Theresa.
So, what are some thoughts on this new album? It sure is a rocker. I think she does channel Neil Young quite nicely on It's A Long Way To The Top.

I like it a lot. I kinda think she's the Patti Smith of alt-country.

Hey y'all. I just thought I'd pipe in here. I just adore Lu's new disc. There are a few songs that I don't love so much, but in general it's great. The songs that I love the most are Real Love, Honey Bee, If Wishes Were Horses, Little Rock Star, Jailhouse Blues, Plan to Marry, Tears of Joy, and It's a Long Way to the Top ( I know, that's most of the CD). I'm just wondering what other Lu fans think.
Also, in the new Rolling Stone, there's an article about Lucinda and Little Honey. In it it says that Lu will release a digital mini-collection of protest songs at the end of this month (perhaps through iTunes?). One more thing to look forward to.

I received an advance copy of Little Honey from a friend and have been listening to it for a couple of weeks now. So far I'm sorry to say I don't think it's very good, and reflects a continuing decline in Lucinda's songwriting craftsmanship since Essence (still my favorite album of the millenium). Kevin, as an English teacher I'm wondering how you can avoid cringing when comparing the generally trite lyrics of many of these songs to the evocative novellas of Car Wheels on a Gravel Road or the heartbreakingly poignant and laconic ballads of Essence. "If wishes were horses I'd have a ranch, come on and give me another chance"? Good grief!
On the positive side, some of these songs are fun (especially the duet with Elvis Costello on Jailhouse Tears, a song that goes back a few years now) and all reflect Lucinda's trademark honesty and raw vocal gifts, if not her skill as a songwriter. I'm really glad she's happy at this point in her life, but I was also glad she only played five songs from Little Honey when I saw her recently and didn't make me suffer through the whole album. Some of these songs (like Honey Bee and Tears of Joy) do fare somewhat better in concert thanks to the formidable distractions of her kick-ass band.
I'm really looking forward to Lu's collection of protest songs.

Interesting to hear your feedback Keith. I've been hesitating to buy the new album, because although I've bought her last two albums and had periods of enthusiasm about them, I find myself not listening to them much. Whereas, Car Wheels and Essense seem to be real keepers. I'm going to keep listening online for a bit.
I think it's amazing in a way how, just as a new artist has to struggle to carve out a good reputation, an established artist can coast on a good reputation for quite a while!

Sometimes it's almost scary how often Keith and I feel the same way about music. I couldn't agree more if I had written this myself.
