The music of award-winning recording artist Ani DiFranco—with its percussive guitar, insistent vocals and willingness to address sexual and social politics—defies neat categories. DiFranco has collaborated with artists as diverse as Prince, Cyndi Lauper and Utah Phillips and has inspired countless musicians to refuse to allow their art to be subsumed by commerce. DiFranco’s two-disc retrospective album, Canon, is due out in September. A book of her poetry and paintings, Verses, is scheduled to be published in November.

Date & Time: Sun, Dec 16, 2007, 7:30pm

Location: Lexington Avenue at 92nd Street Directions

Venue: Kaufmann Concert Hall

Price: $35.00 All Sections

This program is part of our fall season and will be available for sale August 2.

Bumping this thread cuz our newbie Marcel is an Ani fan. Hope we'll see you in here, Marcel.

...and also thinking about her piece "Grand Canyon," which always seems to take root in my thoughts on Independence Day...

I love my country
by which I mean
I am indebted joyfully
to all the people throughout its history
who have fought the government to make right
where so many sons and daughters
our foremothers and forefathers
came singing through slaughter
came through hell and high water
so that we could stand here
and behold breathlessly the sight
how a raging river of tears
cut a grand canyon of light

he Elise,

I've read *ALL* artist threads in this forum :D

re: grand canyon.
I do have most of Ani's CDs. although to be honest,
'spoken word' songs -in general- are not really for me, I'm afraid...
I read that Ani is quite fond of them...
I prefer songs like 'Gravel', '2 little girls' or '32 flavors' etc.

I did see Ani play live last year in Amsterdam, when she was touring Europe (accompanied by her husband and daughter...)
She has quite a loyal following, that seem to go to all concerts...

She's playing in Amsterdam again on october 27th 2008. with Anais Mitchell opening (Anais' first cd is one of my favorites) !

p.s. here are 2 complete professional concert video recordings (2002 & 2004) :

http://www.fabchannel.com/ani_difranco_ ... 002-07-12/

(it starts with an extremely irritating commercial  )

Don't get me wrong. I love her songs as well. Dilate is my favorite record of hers...it's all such genius. But I do think her words are the strongest part of her artistry, and as such I find her spoken-word pieces to be equally powerful and moving. "Self-Evident" moves me to tears practically every time I listen to it.

It's so much fun to be at one of her shows and watch her, stoned out of her mind, hopping around in her enormous boots and cargo pants. LOL. I miss going to Ani gigs.

I agree, that's a great album.

The first Ani album that I got was 'little plastic castle' (1998)

Did you go see her, in this millenium
Because, I think that she changed a bit in recent years. (see above concert links) no more nose ring and purple hair...
Although she still wore the same cargo pants last year...

I do plan to go see her again in October, (If I don't have to travel for my work... )

Yeah, when I saw her in Knoxville last year she was *way* high...talking about sparkling lights and stuff. It was hilarious...and somewhat comforting to know that even though she's a mother now, she hasn't given up on all her wild ways.

have fun seeing her! I'm jealous. :)

I hope that I can get the new 'red letter year' cd at the gig...
I haven't heard it yet.

Too bad Anais' set was only 30 minutes.
She isn't doing any solo gigs in Holland,
I would have liked to see that...

I video'd only a few Ani and Anais songs:

(select high quality)

the fabchannel high quality streams aren't up yet (should be within a couple of days)
I counted 5 hi-def cameras!
