The New Pornographers

Postby Fool On Fire » Fri Jun 29, 2007 4:14 pm

I can't understand why there's not a separate thread for this group.

So, thanks to the lovely Angela, I am currently bingeing on the New Pornographers' newest record, Challengers. Holy crap. What a great rock'n'roll record. My repeat-button favorites so far are: "go places" (holy Neko! breathtaking), "all the old showstoppers," "adventures in solitude," "challengers," and the incredibly weird "myriad harbor" (thank you Dan Bejar for being so thoroughly off the wall).

Who else has heard it? Ang? Scoote? Neko fans wanna weigh in?

I am absolutely in love with Challengers. I haven't listened to anything else for the past two weeks. My favorites are: "All the Old Showstoppers", "Challengers", "Myriad Harbour" (thrilled to see that this track finally grew on ya, Lisey hehe), "Go Places", and "Adventures in Solitude". My least favorite song is "All the Things That Go to Make Heaven and Earth". It sounds like somebody made a copy of Challengers for a friend, and decided to stick a B side from Mass Romantic right in the middle of the playlist. It doesn't fit...and the mix is horrible! ATTGTMHAE is my only gripe; the rest of the album is flawless.

I'm really pleased with this one, and I wasn't sure I would be, with it being a departure from their old stuff.

The title song is repeatedly breaking my heart. I can't stay away. Neko's voice never fails to amaze me. It's just the most delicious thing my ears could ever taste. Completely enveloping.

"Go Places" also has a lot in it to please me, but somehow it doesn't quite satisfy me, and it's hard to explain, because so much of it is so right. I think it doesn't start out the way I want it to. I'm happier with it starting about thirty seconds in, when Neko sings. I do love the line "from somewhere unseen, a deus ex machina, good morning, Christina". Very clever.

"The Old Show Stoppers" is another favorite, and Carl's voice really pleases me on "My Rights VS Yours" and "Unguided.", and the production on most all of this album is really impressive.

"Adventures in Solitude" is such an unexpected song from them. Very nice. I'm another "Myriad Harbor" fan. It's too fun.

The song "Challengers" alone is enough to satisfy me for quite sometime. All the elements are perfect. I'm truly wrecked by it.

The actual CD sounds SOOOO much better than the mp3s.
I could never tell much difference, but here, it is readily apparent.
I've heard TONS of "new" things and it sounds so much more crisp and clear. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

Challengers is the CD of the year for me so far.

[edit] This CD is nothing short of just amazing. Get it now if you're even a casual fan.

OK, New Porn lovers!! Critical question:

.... on Myriad Harbour.... 2:26, maybe 2:27 seconds in.... do you hear one of those old Messenger "sssppprrrrllliiiiing!!" sounds?

Saw them last night in Tucson, it was a blast. I had seen Neko before, but not the whole group.

Before the show we (Peanut is the other half of the we) parked near the venue, and because I hate traffic we were there around 2...
Anyhow, we got out of the car and I put Peanut down on the ground at which point people begin streaming out of the stage door and we're suddenly surrounded by a group of pornographers all cooing and taking pictures of Peanut (she had her shoes and sunglasses on...) and then Neko's dog came out and they were introduced. It was one of those moments that totally took me off guard, so I didn't say anything about knowing who they were, but fun times.

The show set list/banters
# All Of The Things That Go To Make Heaven and Earth

# Use It
(At this point there was some discussion about the crowd which spawned a lot of love towards the stage, and Neko saying she felt very good about herself now)

# Myriad Harbor

# Electric Version
(Launched into a conversation about the Artic Monkeys)

# All The Old Showstoppers
(Another break to talk about Animal Collective, where it was decided that they were the best band ever, to which Neko said, "Thta's what you said about Arcade Fire.")

# (Something)

# Challengers

# Miss Teen Wordpower

# My Rights vs Yours (during which Neko's dog made a first appearance)

# Stacked Crooked
(The band started fishing for love, Kathyrn said she was feeling ugly, Neko said something about her poor GPA that she never brought up, and then about how it was the first time since 1976 that the Canadian dollar was equal to the US dollar and that digressed to the years of jokes the Canadians have had to put up with and that now Americans would never visit.

Neko quipped that "they might have already decided that" and then the conversation fell apart to "it was written so it will be!" and about the dog of prophecy - the dog came back out - and Neko cooing "you're not the bringer of the apocalypse are you?"

She proceeded to lie down with the dog for a moment, then got up and said that she didn't want to "fucking hear from the PETA people" because the dog was deaf, that she liked the vibrations of rock and roll and that her ear drums burst a long time ago)

# The Spirit Of Giving

# Laws Have Changed

# These Are The Fables

# Twin Cinema

# (Something)

# Mutiny I Promised You

# Sing Me Spanish Techno

# Bleeding Heart Show

-Encore-

# (Something)

# (Something)

# The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism

Wow, Lilly, "Peanut" really comes in handy for getting you to meet musicians! :) Sounds like a blast.

I play it again and again and it does not much on me, alas... Some tunes are nice, but there's something with the sound I can't deeply connect to - and certainly not the male vocals... But The NP's music usually does that to me (I know the four discs!), and sometime, weeks or months later, I'm charmed by some of their stuff here and there...
