Diana Jones

Yes, there's a whole world of music out there besides Patty.

Diana Jones

Diana Jones released her third album last year, My Remembrance Of You, and she has received a lot of acclaim for it. She is constantly being compared to Gillian Welch and Iris Dement. When I was trying to think of a way to describe Diana, those were the first 2 artists that came to mind; her music (and hillbilly voice  ) has similarities to theirs, but Diana is my favorite of the 3. :)

There is some live music by her in the mvyradio archives (Martha's Vinyard Radio) and there is a live interview and performance in the WFUV archives.

The reason I'm mentioning her now is that there is a torrent by Diana and another singer/songwriter, Jonathan Byrd on bt.etree.org right now. They have toured together and as a side project, they released a duo cd, ByrdJones, earlier this year (sold on their websites). Some of it can be heard on Diana's myspace page.

You don't have to register at bt.etree.org. The torrent probably won't be active for very long, so if you want it, you better get it now.

Diana will also be touring the UK as the opening act for Richard Thompson within the next couple of weeks (I think).

This torrent is being seeded again (4 people, today anway).

If anyone would like to listen to or download this show in much lesser quality (40 kbps wma), it's up on Sugarmegs.

After getting this torrent, I still think it's worth having, but I wish there was less Jonathan Byrd and more Diana Jones. There's nothing wrong with him, but he seems to dominate this show somewhat. I hope someone will torrent some of her solo shows. :)

Here's a free mp3 by Diana:

diana jones - henry russells' last words (or "Mary").

This is a song Diana wrote based on a letter a trapped West Viriginia coal miner left for his wife in 1927. The story is http://scotlandonsunday.scotsman.com/in ... =659642007.

Here's 2 more radio archives featuring Diana:

Dimeadozen recently listed the following:

Description DIANA JONES
Paradiso
Amsterdam, Netherlands
9th October 2007
Opening for Richard Thompson Band

The crowd wasn't really interested in Diana Jones ( they had come for Richard Thompson), so there was a lot of talk during her set. Moreover, the hall was too large for her music, she needs a smaller, intimate setting.
The few people who did pay attention were spellbound and were treated to a beautiful performance. Her song "Pony", about an Indian girl was impressive.

I'm not familiar with her music, so I need some help with the titles.

01.
02. Pretty Girl
03. (Johnny Cash song)
04. Cold Grey Ground
05. Lay Me Down
06. A Hold On Me
07. Talk & joke
08. Pony
09. Better Times Will Come

Dime DOES require registration unfortunately and has always been difficult to get in (due to popularity).
The Paradiso is a venue featured on Fabchannel, so maybe video might be streamed online (I haven't checked).

KC, thanks again for this additional info. Finally got the seeded concert. Looking at these other links. Screw Dimeadozen's report.

Adding my thanks to kcguy for introducing me to this incredible talent.

The song and story about the trapped coal miner is just so heartbreaking and moving.

Folk Alley Extras: Diana Jones

Diana was interviewed and performed 4 songs:

Pretty Girl
Cracked and Broken
Henry Russell's Last Words
Pony

On the Folk Alley page, you can watch videos of the 4 songs and/or you can listen to the entire interview (with songs) or the songs individually.

You can download the interview and songs if you join ($), but... here is an mp3 of the interview and songs (36 mb, 39 minutes). Perhaps the quality of the mp3 is better if you join; I don't know. :)

(On another page on the Folk Alley site, their biography of Diana says that "My Remembrance of You" is her first full-length recording, but she had 2 albums before that one. They didn't look very hard!)

I (regretfully) only heard part of a recent WFMT Folkstage show featuring Diana.
I didn't believe Diana would ever write another song that I would love as much as Pony, but Cracked and Broken is it! :D

Also, on Dime, there is a short torrent of Mary Gauthier and Diana Jones performing as a duo (Bremen, Germany April 14, 2008). It's a good show, though not complete and Mary does most (not all) of the lead singing. Hopefully someone will post the complete show if/when it is broadcast.

:)

Unfortunately, Gerry was sick and couldn't join me last night but I was able to attend a great house concert with Diana Jones.

Diana mentioned that she has a new album coming out that will be released in Europe in February and in the U.S. in April. She played several songs from it.

I was able to purchase a CD she sells only at shows with 24 tracks of radio interviews and live radio performances It has several songs on it that aren't on any of her released albums.

I got a chance to talk with her afterwards about her undergrad days at Sarah Lawrence College, where my brother has been a professor for the last 22 years. She claimed that she's still annoyed that she was closed out of his one of his literature courses and that her roommate had loved his course on "Forms of Comedy." I was surprised to learn that she'd "majored" in painting as an undergrad-- Sarah Lawrence doesn't really have "majors." Anyway... if you get a chance to see her, I urge you to catch her live.

And I LOVE the house concert concept!!!
