2007 mix CD

Let's see... You have to make your best 80mn CD of fave songs of 2007...

I chose the rule of one song per artist (it's difficult enough like that!). Then I had in mind I was making the CD for a friend, and got to keep it attractive and accessible (otherwise my own tastes can be pretty crazy and hard to digest - even for myself). Then of course you have to keep a balance (like, avoiding five sad songs in a row...). And I must admit I had to put aside some of my fave albums on which no song can "hit" alone (the Nina Nastasia one - the fave of my LPs list, to boot - comes to mind).

And finally, had to change one or two songs of one or two artists to keep it under 80 minutes...

So, at least right now, I think I made the perfect CD for a friend... and in roughly chronological order!

2007 CD (time : 79:36)

1. Julie Doiron - Dark Horse
2. Kristin Hersh - The Thin Man
3. Patty Griffin - Heavenly Day
4. Plastiscines - Loser
5. Lucinda Williams - Fancy Funeral
6. Moore + Sons - Swingin Bridge
7. Matthew Ryan - Everybody Always Leaves
8. The Roches - The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane
9. Eleni Mandell - Perfect Stranger
10. Devon Sproule - Keep Your Silver Shined
11. Rufus Wainwright - Going to a Town
12. Mark Olson - Sandy Denny
13. Kelly Willis - Nobody Wants to Do to the Moon Anymore
14. Paul Curreri - The Velvet Rut
15. Kim Richey - Something to Say
16. Josh Rouse - Nice to Fit In
17. Peter Himmelman - The Ship of Last Hope
18. Linda Thompson - Give Me a Sad Song
19. The New Pornographers - Myriad Harbour
20. Joe Henry - Our Song
21. Mary Gauthier - Between the Daylight & the Dark

I'm happy with the result: it's as pleasant as beautiful, with moving moments and upflifting ones. And of course my tastes are widely folk-pop-rock.

I also noticed one thing while making this CD: Linda Thompson makes the best country music! Ain't that funny for a British singer?

Wow, that was quite a task. Here's my contribution, though I A) don't mind having 5 sad songs in a row! B) am including songs that didn't come out on a disc this year but were offered on the artist's website for download this year or C) came out for the first time in a compilation/ greatist hits package this year.

Anyway, here's my list:
1. Patty Griffin--Crying Over
2. Jill Sobule--the Rapture
3. Lucinda Williams--Everything Has Changed
4. Bruce Springsteen--Gilrs in Their Summer Clothes
5. Brandi Carlisle--Turpentine
6. Justin Currie--No, Surrender
7. Peter Himmelman--17 Minutes to 1
8. Stevie Nicks--Rock and Roll (live)
9. Tori Amos--Big Wheel
10. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers--Stories We Could Tell
11. Mary Chapin Carpenter--Why Shouldn't We
12. Suzanne Vega--New York City is a Woman
13. Cowboy Junkies--Blue Eyed Savior
14. Mark Knopfler--Secondary Waltz
15. Eddie Vedder--Hard Sun
16. John Mellencamp (w/ Joan Baez)--Jim Crow
17. Alison Krauss and Robert Plant--Gone Gone Gone

It's probably not a full 80 minutes (I haven't actually made the CD yet), but I think it's close. And I still haven't gotten the new Waifs or Archie Roach CDs yet from Down Under, so I may be adding on a song or two once those come in.
