Yes, there's a whole world of music out there besides Patty.

I'll never understand why Tift isn't way more well-known than she is -- she's got a beautiful voice, writes really good songs, has amazing stage presence and great musicians backing her, and always does a very high-energy show (I've seen her six times, including last night). And she's about the nicest person you'd ever want to meet besides! Maybe it's because she rarely seemed to tour outside her home state of North Carolina. I've always loved her music, and I've included her songs on most of my compilations.

As Arlene already posted, we watched her do a great solo set at Union Hall in Brooklyn last night at very close range. Here's Stray Paper:

http://keithfromny.org/downloads/tm2008-01-11a.mp3

At one point she surprised us all and decided to stand on the very edge of the stage in front of her mic stand (about 4 feet away from us) and do Supposed to Make You Happy unplugged:

http://keithfromny.org/downloads/tm2008-01-11b.mp3

She also played at least half a dozen new songs which sounded great, but I don't imagine she wants them posted on the Internet before her new album comes out next month -- it should be great! It would have been a perfect set if not for a photographer clicking her shutter throughout most of the first half of the set. :?

The big news for us local fans is that Tift has moved to Manhattan! :D And she assured me I'll be seeing quite a lot of her around here after the new album comes out, when she'll be touring with a band. Her long-time drummer and boyfriend Zeke was at the show last night.

(my condolences to you fans in the Southeast)

A plug for Tift's excellent ACL DVD, I bought it a few months ago and it's one of my favorites:

Her live album is also highly recommended:

Another Country
Still Pretending
Supposed to Make You Happy
Something To Me
Broken
Keep You Happy
Good Hearted Man

I haven't kept up with Tift very well. I bought Bramble Rose I don't know how long ago, but I did catch her original ACL broadcast. :)
Well, when Keith or Arlene give a positive and enthusiastic review of an artist, I tend to take notice. Not that I don't do that with everyone's opinions on Pattynet, but y'all see plenty of shows and write about them! Thank you very much, kids. :D
I'll be dl-ing those songs now, after listening to Bramble Rose again. Oh, this album has a very old-time traditional country flavor, and done with such quality in musicianship and recording, it's shockingly good! I still like to use the term "album", rather than "CD". I guess I always considered the songs contained in an album to be little sonic paintings... album, portfolio, collection, all nice warm words. CD just sounds cold, heh.

I think Tift is very popular on the Euro-Americana scene. I have to get off my butt and finally get a CD of hers!

My friend is a fan of Tift, but I haven't heard a lot from her. I like what I did hear though and I'd love to catch her in Pittsburgh, but alas, it's a 21 and over club. Forget drinking, I can't wait to turn 21 so I can get into bar concerts! haha

At least two of the torrent sites have the Union Hall show as well:

Don't know how well it compares to Keith's MP3s.

George's DPA mics are better than the ones I used so the sound is a little more realistic, but he also picked up more audience noise because he was standing further back from the stage.

Wow, Tift really done good on Leno last night! Image If you have a broadband connection, you can download an NTSC format .mpg file of her appearance from my website here. The file is about 235Mb.

Very cool to see Doug Pettibone playing pedal steel -- anyone know if he will be touring with her?

Damn. I missed it, and the link's not working for me. I am really enjoying the live show you recorded, Keith, thanks very much. I'm curious about what happened when she started playing "Virginia", then stopped and started laughing and said that was the best heckling she ever had.

Hi Joanna,

You can try going to the bottom of this page and right-clicking the link (or whatever Mac users do instead if you're one of those) to save the file.

I think it was an audible belch that made Tift crack up mid-song during Virginia.
