Favorite albums of 2008

Yes, there's a whole world of music out there besides Patty.

OK, so far it looks like just Marybeth and Keith are up for it. I'll put my CDs together and get them off to you both after the holiday, OK? And I think I'm going to include Sundirtwater. It seems like it had an Australian release date and a US one as well. I tried to order it early from some website in Oz, but it never went through. I had to wait until Amazon got it, which was in 2008, and my CD has a 2008 date on it.

Raise your e-hands if you want in. It's never too late.

I definitely should have included these two on my list:

Sex & Gasoline - Rodney Crowell
Rattlin' Bones - Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson

Negligent oversight on my part.

I forgot to include Capercaillie's Roses and Tears, probably because most of it is sung in Gaelic.

I just finished my "Favorites of 2008" mix and posted a link to it in the 2008 Mixes forum.

My favorite is Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson Rattlin' Bones.

Shane recently released a solo album Familiar Ghosts but I haven't ordered it from Australia yet... But I bet I will like it a lot. :-D

I have not heard that many new records this year. My favorites though, are Ray Davies' "Working Man's Cafe", Sam Phillips' "Don't Do Anything" and Rodney Crowell's "Sex and Gasoline". I will update with others. I want that new Kasey Chambers/Shane Nicholson cd, but I haven't got it yet. track on the paste cd was great though (or was it the songwriter magazine?)

I forgot about Attack & Release by The Black Keys and Who Killed Amanda Palmer? by Amanda Palmer.

I feel a 2008 mix brewing.

I've got to update my list as well. I just got Amos Lee's Last Days at the Lodge. I first heard him when he opened for Patty this fall, and I liked him well enough. I saw the CD used and bought it and it's just amazing. It's a little jazzy in places, which I usually don't like at all, but I love this CD. In places it sounds a little like Motown, and in others it's just folk, but the sound is amazing and his voice is just great. Definitely in my "A" list.

[slightly revised]

here are mine (in no particular order as of yet);

teddy thompson – “a piece of what you need”
over the rhine - “live from nowhere volume 3”
cat power – “jukebox/dark end of the street"
kathleen edwards – “asking for flowers”
rodney crowell – “sex and gasoline”
shelby lynne – “just a little lovin’ “
cowboy junkies – “trinity revisited”
alejandro escovedo – “real animal”
tift merritt – “another country”
carrie rodriguez – “she ain’t me”
ben sollee – “learning to bend”
ryan adams and the cardinals - "cardinology"
kris delmhorst – “shotgun singer”
david byrne & brian eno – “everything that happens will happen today”
johnny cash - “johnny cash at folsom prison: legacy edition”
bob dylan – “tell tale signs - rare and unreleased 1989-2006”
ray lamontagne - “gossip in the grain”
the waifs - "sundirtwater"

and i'm combining cat power's "dark end of the street" [ep] with "jukebox." they are out of the same sessions and it is just like an extension of that project.

I agree about Rattlin' Bones. I haven't really heard all that many albums from '08 but RB is probably my favorite--even beating out Teddy Thompson's last record. And for me that's a pretty big deal.
