R.I.P. Don Kirshner

Postby Rob » Tue Jan 18, 2011 3:44 pm

I met Mr. Kirshner in 2007 when he was being given an award for lifetime achievement at the Songwriters Hall of Fame. For such a major figure in the songwriting world (the Brill Building Sound), he was just so gracious and humble. He was a genuinely nice person whose artists loved him. And when you look at some of the music he shepherded into the world, it becomes clear why he was called the Man With the Golden Ear.

Of course I'd remembered him from when I was a kid and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert was on TV. The Allman Brothers, Black Sabbath, The Police, Skynyrd, and these guys were just a few of the acts that appeared on his great show.

It is sad, because the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame never honored him. I think it's why he was so touched to be honored at Songwriters. It really meant a lot to him.

And let's face it, when you get spoofed on SNL, you've made it. That's Paul Shaffer in the skit... he loved Don.
