3 weeks in the US, need some music (live)

Hi guys,

This spring, I'll be in the US for 3 weeks. 1 week in Chicago, 1 week in New Orleans, and 1 week in San Fransisco / Bay Area and LA.
We always love to go and see some live shows when we are abroad. One of my greatest travel memories is seeing the Indigo Girls play in Asheville, North Carolina a couple of years ago.
BUT, it can be hard to figure out where to go and when to buy tickets. So I'm asking your advice: is there something like a website, or online publication that lists shows and concerts in venues of different sizes all over the US? Or maybe just for specific cities? Wheren you can select dates and see what's on?

if not, could you recommend some venues in the cities I've mentioned that are worth checking out (they can be really small venues where unknown singer-songwriters are playing, don't have to be arenas where major acts perform).

P.S. New Orleans is the least of my worries, we'll be staying with friends there and I'm sure they'll be able to point us to where the good music is (which seems to be easy to find there anyway!)

Thanks in advance.

Klary

Pollstar has pretty comprehensive listings. Just search by city.

good venues in Chicago include Fitzgerald's in Berwyn, Schuba's, Lincoln Hall and Space in Evanston. Park West is good but somewhat larger and more up and down in terms of quality of acts. 93xrt.com has pretty decent listings available. You may also be interested in shows at the Old Town School of Folk Music, if they have any notable stuff when you're in town. A google search should help you find their schedule.

the chicago reader has the best listings of upcoming shows:

also, i highly recommend the green mill a jazz club from the '20's:

and if you check out the green mill, thai pastry is just up the street and has yummy thai cuisine.

Venues that I usually go to shows at in the SF Bay Area are...

in SF...
The Fillmore
The Warfield
The Independent
The Great American Music Hall
The Palace of Fine Arts
Cafe du Nord
Yoshi's

in Berkeley...
Berkeley High School Auditorium
the Greek Theater

in Saratoga...
The Mountain Winery (though they don't have shows in the spring )

in Oakland...
The Paramount Theater

The Band of Joy is playing in Berkeley at the Greek Theater on April 22. If you are going to be here then and want to go, let me know :) I think Karen and I are going.

Hope you find some shows to go to :)

Klary -
Someone on the Lucinda Williams board was taking a trip to New Orleans and wanted to know from her the best places to visit. This is what she wrote and her husband posted on that board:

Yes. Lucinda posts her own stuff on her Facebook page but not on her website, but her husband posts there quite frequently. Lucinda wrote out those notes and her husband scanned them and posted them....because a fan asked to know from her some of her favorite places to visit in NO.

I hope you enjoyed your jaunt through the US!
