Covering Patty

Postby Ian » Fri Nov 28, 2008 1:52 pm

Forgive me if it's been done before but how about a place for covers of Patty's songs to reside?

This is a strange one I came across whilst reading some comments on YouTube

I like it too, Ian, even though it seems he tried to copy Patty pretty much note-for-note.

although I'm sure that every man and his dog here have seen this.....

I've just watched the video through again, for the first time in quite a while and that video still makes me moist of eye.

I'm not a massive Chicks fan but I must admit they do justice to this song. I particularly like the bit where the strings come in towards the end... triffic!

Thanks for that, Ian! I have never seen the video before but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Chicks' version of TotW (hush Lisey).

This guy gets props for trying and putting it out there. Although I'm sure Simon would have stomped on him quickly if he'd done it on AI.

Oh, Gah, that was painful. His mic was too hot and it damaged my deaf ears even more. Thanks, Robert.

I'm thinking of starting a thread called "Murdering Patty."
Seriously.
That guy could fit there.

Murder is SUCH a strong word. How about "Involuntary Manslaughter(ing) Patty." The way I see it, there's no intention to kill or cause serious injury on the part of most people covering Patty, but there is a certain recklessness or negligence involved in some attempts.

Perhaps Arlene would care to share her thoughts on the proper Penal Law that would apply in this circumstance.

I forgive you for maiming my hearing further, Rob. You'e right. Murder is a little harsh. How about 'Maiming Patty'?

I thought Solomon Burke definitely did Patty justice here, and it doesn't hurt to have her singing backup:

How about "Killing Patty". That should cover Murder 1 and Murder 2, Man 1 and Man 2. and even Depraved Indifference. We wouldn't even have to worry about jurisdictional differences in definitions or pay any fee to Arlene. Of course, you may have to be at least somewhat depraved to check out the posts on a string like that. 8)

I've always loved that cover, particularly with the backup vocals. The feel of the song is so much different from Patty's version on CRT. Both remarkable in their own way. And then there's Patty's own opinion on his cover:

If one has the specific intent to perform the song in question, I would argue that the unintended consequence fails to eliminate the necessary mens rea to qualify as murder, depending on your state. Probably not first degree (for sure in NY), but still possibly murder. I can try and shoot you in the leg, but if I accidentally kill you, it's still murder.
If I died, he'd hear about it, eventually.
