Here's the report from my friend Evan (Zumarust) on the Emmylou Yahoo discussion board:

The evening (Satrday, June 27, 2009) closed with Patty Griffin's set. She took the stage accompanied by Buddy. Here's the setlist, not in the correct order, and I may be forgetting a song:

-The set started with a Bessie Smith song whose title I can't remember
[from Arlene- probably Backwater Blues]
-Take The Ride
-Makin' Pies
-Icicles Falling
-Oh Heavenly Day
-And a couple of songs from her new album coming out, a gospel music album, which she called her "lapsed Catholic gospel album." I don't remember the song titles.
- No Bad News
-Truth No. 2
- Patty performed a new song, not recorded yet, about a soldier returning from the Iraq War
-Shawn Colvin and Emmylou came onstage and joined them for "Love Throw A Line"
and "Mary."
- The encore was "Top Of The World," and then Patty sang an acappella song that she had written for a high school graduation ceremony she sang at. A song of straight-talk wisdom about the challenges of life ahead. A song of hope, but tempered with realism also.

And a wonderful day of music had come to a close for us. The late night revelers could head over to the small stage down the road for the performance of the band Poor Man's Whiskey, but ending the evening's music with Patty Griffin was just perfect for us. And another day of the festival to go!

Also, Evan has reported that Shawn was accompanied by Buddy during her "soplo" set and that the highlight of Shawn's set was when Emmylou Harris and Patty Griffin joined them onstage for an absolutely stunningly-beautiful-beyond-imagination cover of the Beatles song: "I'll Be Back."
They slowed the song down, and the women sang it in gorgeous three-part harmony, and found an amazing depth of emotion in the song. Every line enriched with deeper layers of poignancy and urgency. "You could find better things to do, than to break my heart again...."

Also, during Emmylou's "solo" set, she was joined by Patty G. and Shawn C on "This Is To Mother You", "Red Dirt Girl," "The Pearl," and "The Boy From Tupelo" and the encore, with Emmylou, Patty and Shawn harmonizing accapella was "Calling My Children Home."

Also, during Buddy's solo set, Patty joined him for Gasoline And Matches, Written In Chalk, and Shelter Me.

Kevin and Karen-

Not sure if you met him last year at HSB but Evan is the incredibly tall guy who, along with his wife Jamie, started the tradition of getting up at 4:30 in the morning to get the tarps down so we'll all have great seats at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival. He and Jamie will be there all 3 days this year so if you go, we'll be able to sleep in but still have space right near the stage. Evan and Jamie had a family wedding so they only made the Sunday show in S.F. last year.
"You've got to sing like you don't need the money, love like you'll never get hurt. You've got to dance like no one is watching. It's gotta come from the heart, if you want it to work."
~Susannah Clark

"Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did. She just did it backwards and in high heels." ~Molly Ivins

"If I had to live my life again, I'd make the same mistakes, only sooner."

Thanks, Arlene, for passing on that report. It seems to me that that was the FESTIVAL of all festivals - a combination of each of the members of Three Girls and Their Buddy doing solo (so to speak) shows plus having all of them get together a number of times. For my taste, I prefer to see musicians on their feet moving around as opposed to sitting down, so that would have been another added plus for me. The next time I see that lineup, I'm there (in spite of my usual reluctance to go to festivals). Anyway, here's a good video of Emmylou performing "Boy from Tupelo" with Patty and Shawn obviously enjoying themselves while joining in:
