3 Girls & Their Buddy- Seatle on 7/2/09

From my friend Steve Berry on the Emmylou Yahoo discussion board:

I expected the song lists to be similar between the two evenings, and
this was just going to be a quick note with any different songs. But
only a few songs were repeats from Wednesday night, so I've written
the whole thing up.

Round 1
Emmylou opened with two songs: "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" (with
Buddy providing some sharp chicken-pickin' guitar) followed by Daniel
Lanois' "Black Hawk (and the White Winged Dove)." Patty performed
another song from her forthcoming gospel record (which she thinks will
be out early next year)L "Wade in the Water." Shawn sang a cover of
the Crowded House song: "Always Take the Weather." Buddy went off on a
long tangent about how he used to live in Tacoma ('no, no, no: don't
tell me you are clapping for TACOMA!"), and then sang "Poison Love."
He spent the rest of the evening apologizing for appearing to insult

Round 2
Emmylou sang the song she co-wrote with Kimmie Rhodes: "Love and
Happiness For You." Patty said she just couldn't keep "that happy
thing going" and sang "Truth No. 2." Shawn sang "Summer Dress" and
Buddy sang "Gasoline and Matches."

Round 3
Emmylou started the round with the Tracy Chapman song "All That You
Have is Your Soul" and commented on what a shame it was that Tracy's
second album sold so few copies. Patty announced she was going to sing
one of her two love songs, and that most people didn't realize she
wrote it to her dog Bean while he was asleep snoring in her lap, and
sang "O Happy Day." Shawn sang "I Don't Know Why." Buddy sang "Does My
Ring Burn Your Finger" and told us that someone had actually asked him
to sing this at a wedding, even though the lyrics are inappropriate
for such an event.

Round 4
Emmylou sang a song by the O'Kanes: "When We're Gone, Long Gone."
Patty sang a Bessie Smith song "Backwater Blues" while Buddy used a
bass guitar to make a convincing tuba sound as accompaniment. Shawn
led the girls in a beautiful cover of the Beatles' "I'll Be Back" --
it was quiet and sad with beautiful harmonies. Buddy sang "Wide River
to Cross" with Emmylou's ethereal harmony.

Round 5
Emmylou sang "Boy from Tupelo" Patty sang another song from her new
album: "Never Grow Old" and provided a detailed explanation how her
gospel album came to be. Shawn sang "I'm Gone" and Buddy sang Stephen
Bruton's "Heart of Hearts."

The ensemble closed out the show with "No More Sighs" from Patty's
forthcoming album.. For an encore they sang "Go to Sleep You Little
Baby" and finally they harmonized on Patty's beautiful song "Mary."
"You've got to sing like you don't need the money, love like you'll never get hurt. You've got to dance like no one is watching. It's gotta come from the heart, if you want it to work."
~Susannah Clark

"Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did. She just did it backwards and in high heels." ~Molly Ivins

"If I had to live my life again, I'd make the same mistakes, only sooner."
~Tallulah Bankhead
