Trapeze

A little pink dress, hanging by her knees
Just overhead on the old trapeze
In the old tent tonight, spotlight going round
One of these nights the old girl's going down
Hallelujah, the old girl's going down

She started with us on the back of a horse
Just seventeen and already divorced
She took to the air with the greatest of ease
Like she was born to be gliding on the old trapeze

Some people don't care if they live or they die
Some people want to know what it feels like to fly
Gather their courage and they give it a try

Some guy broke her heart and how her heart it did ache
So she went to the tent of the lady of the snakes
Who gave her a potion and she drank it in
After that her heart never ached again
After that her heart never ached again

Some poeple don't care if they live or they die
Some people want to know what it feels like to fly
Gather their courage and they give it a try
Fall under the wheels of a time gone by

Little pink dress, hanging by her knees
Just overhead on the old trapeze
In the old tent tonight, spotlight going round
One of these nights the old girl's going down
One of these nights the old girl's going down
One of these nights the old girl's going down
Halle- Halle- Hallelujah
Halle- Hallelujah
Hallelujah

"Trapeze" is lovely. It reminds me of "Time of the Dance" for some reason...I don't know why. It's not cuz of the music (cuz I haven't heard the music) - but for some reason the words are making me want to listen to TotD.

Oh and has anyone else noticed Patty's current obsession with horseback riding?

all you wanted was a ride in the saddle
but you did it with the Amazons

...it's just you and a battlefield of women on horseback

-- Riding with the Amazons

back in the saddle again and again
millions of eyes and none of them friends

-- Crying Over

she started with us on the back of a horse
just seventeen and already divorced

-- Trapeze

It's cute. :)

Yay for pretty new Patty songs,
~Elise
I've become the beggar now, and you've become the saint somehow
twist the words and place the blame, and tell me now, aren't we the same?

-- Amy Ray

born under a bad sign, been down since I began to crawl
if it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all

-- Albert King

the saints and all the martyrs look down on dying converts
"what makes the water holy," she said, "is that it's the closest thing to rain..."

-- Josh Ritter

...the blues is the roots...everything else is the fruits...

Staying on the Ride

Little old man, little old man standing in the road
Waiting on the bus, and it's getting kinda cold
The bus finally gets there, he's got nowhere to sit down
The driver said, "You can stand right here behind me or wait for the next one to come around"
The old man says, "That's okay, I'll stand
I might look like a little old man to you
But I've been riding this bus for years and years and years
I don't even know where I'm going to"
And the driver says, "You don't know where this bus is going, do you?"
And the old man says, "No, I don't, do you?"
The driver says, "You don't know where this bus is going, do you?"
And the old man says, "I just want it to get me through
Yeah, I'm gonna stay on the ride, it's gonna take me somewhere
I'm staying on the ride, it's gonna take me somewhere
Somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere"

The bus is rolling along, outside it's looking kinda strange
The Earth's vibrating, the clouds are breaking
Everything is blue where it was gray
A thousand rivers flow over fields of snow
The driver looks back in the mirror for the old man
"Where did he go, where did he go?
Oh, there he is
Hey, old man, old man, old man, you still don't know,"
And the old man says, "No, I don't son, but I'm happy to go
Yeah, I'm staying on the ride, it's gonna take me somewhere
I'm staying on the ride, it's gonna take me somewhere
Somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere

I was born with no name, knowing nothing, but still I've gone
Somebody said, 'You need a name, I'm gonna give you a name'
And I said, 'No, you won't,' I said, 'No, you won't'"
You can let me off here, son, thank you for the ride"
The driver said, "This is the middle of nowhere, sir," he pulls off to the side
The old man says, "It might look that way to you, and maybe it is"
And the old man says, "It might look that way to you, son, hey, maybe it is"
But he says, "Stay on the ride, it's gonna take you somewhere,"
Yeah, he said, "Stay on the ride, it's gonna take you somewhere
Somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, somewhere
It always takes you somewhere, it's got to take you somewhere"

Well, to read or to wait...hmmm...Maybe I'll just read a couple? It is only about a month away.

Anyway, thanks for posting, Gillian! And many thanks to your benefactor as well!

All right, I guess I'm reading them now. Ha.

Wow, stylistically "Burgandy Shoes" is so different for her, I'm excited to hear it!
It's the same old thirst for more
Until they put you in the dirt

*

You saw me through a keyhole
Of a door that I kept locked
But I decorate the threshold
Just in case you knocked

Very cute.
And I'd bet none are about actual horses.

Thank you, Gillian, and to whatever secret sources you had for the lyrics to the new songs. My really odd hearing (or lack thereof) oftentimes does not intrerpret words correctly when sung, so this is very beneficial to me.
It's also nice to read the lyrics and wonder how they will sound coming from Patty on record.
