In a post today, Jerry Henry of had this to say:

Angie Stevens was recently named Denver's Best Singer/Songwriter. She has released her 3rd album, Queen Of This Mess (Boss Koala Records), which has elements of alt-country, indie rock, contemporary folk and pop. Angie talks about Queen Of This Mess, ......"We were going for a family style, Midwest-sitting on your porch-album use of accordions church style organ, violin, viola, low moaning guitar and delicate yet powerful vocals." To me her vocals are akin to Patty Griffin and EmmyLou Harris. Her songs have been featured on HBO, picked on CMT's "Top 20 Video Countdown" and was showcased at SXSW Sundance Film Festival. Good Stuff!

That was enough to get me to check Angie out. Queen of this Mess isn't yet available for streaming on, but I'm very impressed with her 2007 release Stand Up girl. Check it out:

I went to go see her the other week, it was a really good show. But, I really don't see the Patty comparisons. To me she sounds much more Iris Dement or even Nanci Griffith-like.

She covered Top of the World at the show and I didn't hear any Patty in it at all, other than the fact she wrote the song.

Though, style-wise (like fashion style not musically) I see where the latest "Queen of this Mess" might could be compared to ID… Traci did the artwork, Shawna Parvin did the hairstyling and the clothing she's wearing is very Boudoir Queen-esque (but it's not actually by Dawn).

All that said, she's fantastic and her lyrics are really wonderful.
